This project provides a comprehensive analysis of the climate targets set by an energy supplier. It focuses on evaluating the architecture and nature of these targets, as well as assessing the regulatory framework and the associated measures needed for achieving these objectives. The analysis builds on the previous 2022 study conducted by FutureCamp, supplementing it with updated data from the client, sustainability reports, business reports, and further calculations and research by The Climate Desk.
Key Activities:
- Evaluation of Climate Pathways: Examining the alignment of the client's emission reduction targets with the global 1.5°C climate goal, based on remaining carbon budgets and the impacts of global emissions.
- Assessment of Goals: Analyzing the client’s specific climate goals, including an 80% emissions reduction by 2030 in Scope 1 and Scope 2, and achieving climate neutrality by 2040, including both positive and negative emissions measures.
- Sector-Specific Emissions Review: Focusing on the energy sector, waste incineration, and Scope 3 emissions, the analysis identifies key challenges, including underperformance in the waste management sector and potential improvements through negative emissions technologies.
- Comparative Emission Pathway Analysis: Assessing the planned emission pathways across Scopes 1, 2, and 3, evaluating consistency with the targets outlined in Germany’s Climate Protection Act and the Paris Agreement.
- Recommendations for Improvement: Suggesting enhancements to the client’s climate targets and providing strategic recommendations, such as the inclusion of specific negative emissions measures and better data transparency for Scope 3 emissions.
